The Kathmandu Guest House is the gravitational centre of Thamel. Almost every traveller who lands in Nepal passes through its gate at least once — to check in, to ask for a trekking guide, to use the ATM in the courtyard. The question that follows is always the same: where do we eat? This is the honest, walkable answer, written from a sixty-year-old garden restaurant just thirty metres down the lane.
How to read this guide
Every restaurant below is within a five-minute walk of the Kathmandu Guest House gate. We have grouped them by what you might be in the mood for — first night in Kathmandu, post-trek comfort food, vegetarian, late drink, breakfast. Distances are measured from the KGH main entrance on Thamel Chowk. The order inside each section is not a ranking; it is the order in which we would walk past them on a normal evening.
For your first night in Kathmandu
You have just landed. Your bag is half-unpacked. You are slightly jet-lagged and unsure whether your stomach is ready for the full Nepali experience. You want somewhere that feels welcoming, has a menu in English, and serves food you recognise but cooked well.
First-night picks within five minutes of KGH
Northfield Cafe & Jesse James Bar
30 m · garden · live music
On Chaksibari Marg, just south of the KGH gate. Six-cuisine menu (American, Mexican, Indian, Nepali, Continental, Tibetan), live Gandharva folk music every evening, two outdoor fire pits in winter. Open since 1962. Easy on jet lag.
OR2K
3 min · Mandala Street · vegetarian
Israeli/Mediterranean. Cushioned floor seating upstairs. Fully vegetarian. Heaving on weekends.
Roadhouse Cafe
4 min · pizza · busy
Wood-fired pizza, sometimes a queue. Familiar food, fast service.
For the night you come back from a trek
You have walked for fourteen days. The last hot shower was a memory. You want red meat or a serious cocktail or a piece of pie that reminds you of home. This is what we feed the trekkers when they get back.
- Northfield Cafe — Chateaubriand for two (NPR 950), Chicken Fajita Sizzler, Apple Pie with vanilla ice cream, and a Jesse James cocktail by the fire pit. The combination most often repeated by returning trekkers.
- Kathmandu Grill — A wine bar a slightly longer walk away (about eight minutes); excellent steak, slightly more formal.
- Fire and Ice Pizzeria — Italian. Around since 1995. Reliable post-trek wood-fired pies.
For an evening with live music
Thamel has live music in two flavours — the loud bar-band kind, and the traditional folk kind. If you want the second, the choices are very few.
Northfield Cafe hosts a six-to-seven musician Gandharva folk ensemble every evening from approximately 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM — Sarangi, Madal (Nepali drum), Bansuri (flute). The performance is free with dinner; musicians visit individual tables on request. It is one of the very few venues in Kathmandu where you can hear a full Gandharva ensemble nightly in a comfortable garden setting.
For louder, later, bar-band music, walk five minutes north on Thamel Marg and you will hear it before you see it. New Orleans Cafe and Tom & Jerry are the usual answers.
For vegetarian and vegan travellers
- OR2K — Fully vegetarian. Hummus, falafel, sabich, fresh juices. The default Thamel vegetarian answer.
- Forest & Plate — Newer, organic-leaning, plant-forward.
- Northfield Cafe — Vegetarian options across every menu section: Dal Bhat Tarkari, Paneer Makhani, Vegetable Momo, Vegetable Pizza, Cobb Salad without bacon/chicken on request, Spicy Omelette.
For an actual American or English breakfast
Most Thamel hotels serve a passable breakfast included with the room. If you want better, three places open their kitchens at seven in the morning and know what bacon should look like.
- Northfield Cafe — Set Breakfast (NPR 360): eggs your way, bacon, sausage, sautéed mushroom, grilled tomato, sourdough toast, fresh juice and a hot drink. Also a Breakfast Burrito and a Spicy Omelette. From 7:00 AM.
- Pumpernickel Bakery — German-style bakery breakfast, pastries and brewed coffee. About six minutes from KGH.
- Helena's Restaurant — Long-running budget breakfast spot with a rooftop view.
For a late, quiet drink
Thamel's nightlife is mostly noisy — and a few of the bars are properly raucous. If you want one good drink, a quiet conversation, and somewhere you can hear the other person, the choices narrow.
The Jesse James Bar at Northfield is small, dark and exact. Eight bar stools, a banquette, polished wood, frontier-era prints from the 1876 Northfield, Minnesota bank robbery that gave the bar its name. The bartenders measure with jiggers. The Old Fashioned uses a single Mustang-orange peel and a brown-sugar cube. The signature Jesse James cocktail — bourbon, smoked maple, blackberry, citrus oil, NPR 480 — has been on the menu since the 1980s. Last orders 10:15 PM.
Finding any of these from the KGH gate
Step out of the Kathmandu Guest House gate. You are facing Thamel Chowk — the small intersection that organises the neighbourhood. Most of the restaurants here sit in the streets that radiate from this point. Chaksibari Marg runs south (Northfield is on the right after about thirty metres, behind a wooden gate strung with paper lanterns). Mandala Street is just to your west; Saat Ghumti runs north. The whole grid is genuinely small and walkable. If you get lost, ask any shopkeeper — they all know the restaurants.
Friday and Saturday evenings during October and trekking season — book 24 hours ahead.
